General Average
General Average is first cited in Rhodian law but must, even at that epoque, have been long-standing and widespread maritime practice.
Rhodian law continued to be the reference for nautical matters for the Romans and it was only upon the decline of the Empire that it fell into oblivion, notwithstanding that its principles seem to have survived by way of custom. Maritime customs have been coded at various times, the most important of such Codes probably being the Rolls or Judgements of Oleron attributed to a Court of the Bordeaux region of France and allegedly revised by Richard I on his return from the Holy Land. This code was subsequently copied into or formed the basis of the maritime law major contemporary sea-faring nations.
